LAN Administrator Utility

Post by llnadmin » Sat Nov 28, 2015 9:05 pm

It's been pretty quiet here on the forums as of late, but that doesn't mean that nothing is happening...

In fact, we are working hard on a tool that will allow the administrators of LAN groups to edit their LAN's information. We are calling this the LAN Admin Utility. It will let users in the LAN Administrators group of the forums to log in with the same account that they registered through the LAN Link forum board, making it easier to access without a separate username and password. Information like event location, websites, and gaming platforms, can be changed. They can even change the LAN group name if necessary. Pretty much anything that can be seen by the public on our website, can be changed.

Not only will it do that, it will also be an event management system, allowing LAN group administrators to add events, change event information, or even remove events that have not yet happened. Changes made to upcoming events will be reflected on the website's calendars.

We hope to have most (if not all) of these features completed by the end of the year.

Registered a forum account, but not yet in the LAN Administrators group? Simply submit a request to us through the User Control Panel. Please note that we will need to verify that you are an administrator of a LAN group, before we can grant you access to the utility.

To access the utility, click on the Admin link at the very bottom of the website.

Update:
OK, so we are a bit behind schedule with the utility, but we are definitely making progress with it's implementation. It will be at least a few more days before the first part of the utility can be used (LAN group details component). The events section of the utility will be ready in approximately 2 weeks from now.

An update to the requests page, however, has been completed. LAN administrators can now make requests to join the 'LAN Administrators' forum group, along with a particular LAN group that they are an administrator of. This makes it quicker for LAN Link administrators to process requests, while providing access to the LAN Admin utility to approved users.

Once the button next to the LAN administrators group is clicked, a form will be displayed, giving the user/administrator a list of LANs to choose from.

If the administrator's LAN is not active, or not on our database, a tickbox can be clicked to view a list of inactive LANs. It also provides a text box to type a web address in if the LAN is new, or not on either list.

Finally, the 'Submit' button is clicked as per usual. LAN Link administrators are then notified that a request to join the 'LAN Administrators' group has been made, along with the LAN that they want to have control over.

On a related matter, we now have a new database, and are in the process of copying the data over from the older one. Active LAN group details are complete, with the remainder to be finished in the coming weeks. The locations of LAN groups with two locations can now be viewed (primary and alternative), as well as clearly visible links to social media websites and the like.

Update:
So, it has been quite a while since a post was made here. Approximately 95% of the LAN group details component of the LAN Admin utility is complete, with just a couple of bugs still to iron out. Unfortunately, after the website developer has been working flat out on the LAN Link website and LAN Admin utility in his holidays, he has to now resume TAFE studies (which just so happens to be in website development). We are now looking at finishing the remainder of the utility in 3 - 4 months time (don't worry, we will get it done).

As stated previously, LAN Administrators can still apply to join the LAN Administrators group, which will then give them access to the utility. With the exception of the map marker, all group details can now be modified by their respective LAN Admin. At least that's something worth celebrating...
